**E133: Chemical Reaction Engineering – Fall 2023** |[home](index.md.html)|[assignments](assignments.md.html)|[final project](FinProj.md.html)|[notes and code](notecode.md.html)| !!! Warning The E133 website has been updated for Fall 2023. Let me know if you find any errors or broken links on the website and I'll fix them. !!! Note Apparently, a number of students have felt intimidated to see the entire semester laid out on the first day of class. My intent is **not** to intimidate you. It is to permit you to plan out your semester and account for Clinic, research, athletic trips, or illness without having to resort to asking for extensions or stressing about when you turn things in. Gradescope will also release all of the problem sets and other assignments on the first day of class, so that you may submit them at any time before the due date. !!! Warning **Masking Policy** – I will personally be masking for the first two weeks of class. You may choose to mask or not as you see fit. After the first two weeks, I will evaluate how the general health of the college is going, and either choose to continue masking or not. # Instructor and Text __Professor:__ Erik Spjut

ISBN: 978-1-118-36825-1 # Student Learning Objectives Students will: * Use the three classical reactor models, batch, PFR, CSTR to design isothermal reactors to meet specified processing goals. * Determine kinetic models from experimental data. * Determine activation energies from experimental data. * Design optimal reactor schemes for processing competing series and parallel reactions. * Design optimal reactor schemes for non-isothermal reactors and reactions. * Design reactors for processing heterogeneously catalyzed and/or biochemical reactions. # Course components: Component | Information ----------|------------ Lectures | Most Thursdays and Tuesdays Homework | Due most Tuesdays. No late homework accepted. Exams | Three mid-term exams, designed to be completed in 75 minutes, due 24 hours after start of exam period. Final Project | Determine kinetic data from pseudo-experimental data. Use the data to design and optimize a chemical processing scheme to meet specified objectives. # Grading: Homework problems will be graded with the following rubric: Points | Evaluation ------:|----------- 5 | Wow 4 | Good 3 | Fair 2 | Poor 1 | Ouch 0 | DND The exams and final project will be graded with a traditional 100 point total scale. I don't accept late assignments, but we can usually work something out for illness or excused absences. Contact me if you're facing issues regarding getting assignments in on time. ## Grade Weighting: Component | % of Total --------------|----------- Homework | 20% Exam 1 | 20% Exam 2 | 20% Exam 3 | 20% Final Project | 20% # Calendar Tuesday 29 August 2023: Cpt. 1, Sec. 3.0 - Reading: Chapter 1, Section 3.0 Tuesday 29 August 2023: Intro & Basics - Topics: Introduction, Stoichiometric Coefficients, Extent of Reaction, Fractional Conversion, Reaction Rate, Variable Volume, Mole Balance Thursday 31 August 2023: Sec. 8.0–8.3 - Reading: Sections 8.0–8.3 Thursday 31 August 2023: Batch, CSTR, PFR - Topics: Batch Reactors, Continuous Flow Well-Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR), Plug Flow Reactors (PFR) Tuesday 05 September 2023: Sec. 3.0.1, Cpt. 4 - Reading: Section 3.0.1, Chapter 4 Tuesday 05 September 2023: Reaction Order - Topics: Reaction Order, Reaction Mechanisms Tuesday 05 September 2023: HW 1 Due - [Assignment 1](assignments.md.html) Due Thursday 07 September 2023: Cpt. 4 - Topics: Reaction Mechanisms, Activated Rate Theory Thursday 07 September 2023: Mech. & ART - Reading: Chapter 4 Tuesday 12 September 2023: Cpt. 3 - Reading: Chapter 3 Tuesday 12 September 2023: Int. & Diff. College students in general and Mudd students in particular often experience issues that may interfere with academic success such as academic stress, sleep problems, juggling responsibilities, life events, relationship concerns, or feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, or depression. If you or a friend is struggling, we strongly encourage you to seek support. Helpful, effective resources are available on campus, at no charge. - If you are struggling with E133, please text, email, or visit me. - Check-in with an academic dean if you are struggling in courses or unsure what academic resources are available at HMC by emailing academicdeans@g.hmc.edu. - Reach out to The Office of Health and Wellness to discuss options available to by emailing wellness@hmc.edu - **MCAPS provides crisis support services 24/7/365. Students can call us at 909-621-8202 and press “1” at the prompt to speak with a crisis counselor.** Other prompt options are available for those not in crisis.
