**E178 Flight Hardware 2023** |[home](index.md.html)|[syllabus](syllabus.md.html)|[assignments](assignments.md.html)|[labs](labs.md.html)|[final project](finalproject.md.html)|[flight data](FlightData.md.html)|[getting certified](RocketryCertification.md.html)| # Labs 1-2, & 4-5 Rockets Each student will be provided with two rocket kits: - A [LOC Precision Weasel](https://locprecision.com/collections/rockets-1-63-diameter/products/weasel) suitable for a Level-1 flight. - A [LOC Precision Vulcanite](https://locprecision.com/collections/rockets-2-26-diameter/products/vulcanite-h76) modified for [Dual Deployment](https://www.apogeerockets.com/Intro-to-Dual-Deployment) , useable for a Level-1 flight, and suitable for a Level-2 Flight. You will be provided with the kits. The lab will be stocked with additional hardware, construction supplies, and safety equipment. If you want to paint your rocket, you will have to supply primer and spray paint. These rockets will be yours to keep after the class is over. However, any surviving avionics must be returned. # Final Project Rockets Each team is expected to construct and fly a rocket as part of their [Final Project](finalproject.md.html). The base kit, which we strongly encourage you to use as the basis for your project, is a modified Madcow [2.2" Fiberglass Adventurer](https://www.madcowrocketry.com/2-2-fiberglass-adventurer/). You may choose instead a modified [1.6" Madcow Go Devil](https://www.madcowrocketry.com/1-6-fiberglass-go-devil/), which will require much more design work, or a design of your choice if both team members are certified Level 2 for your [Final Project](finalproject.md.html). The team may decide on the disposition of the Final Project Rocket once the class is over. However, any surviving avionics must be returned. # Avionics We have a supply of different avionics packages that you can fly. We recommend the following: - For the LOC Precision Weasel - The [Small Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thesmallteensyimuandlogger) - A [Featherweight GPS Transmitter and Ground Station](#avionicsdetails//featherweightgpstracker) - For the Dual Deploy LOC Precision Vulcanite - The [Small Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thesmallteensyimuandlogger) or the [Large Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thelargeteensyimuandlogger) - A [Featherweight GPS Transmitter and Ground Station](#avionicsdetails//featherweightgpstracker) - An [Eggtimer Quark flight computer](#avionicsdetails//eggtimerquark) - For the Modified Madcow Adventurer - The [Small Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thesmallteensyimuandlogger) or the [Large Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thelargeteensyimuandlogger) - A [Featherweight GPS Transmitter and Ground Station](#avionicsdetails//featherweightgpstracker) - A [Featherweight Raven 3 flight computer](#avionicsdetails//featherweightraven3) - An [Eggtimer Quark flight computer](#avionicsdetails//eggtimerquark) In addition, if you have a use for them, especially for your Final Project, you may request - The [Large Teensy E178 IMU and Logger](#avionicsdetails//thelargeteensyimuandlogger) (only 2) - An [AIM XTRA flight computer and AIM Base ground station](#avionicsdetails//aimxtraandaimbase) - An [Eggfinder TX or Mini with matching Eggfinder LCD](#avionicsdetails//eggfindertxandeggfindermini) - A [Pnut Altimeter](http://www.perfectflite.com/pnut.html) - A [MissileWorks RRC2L Altimeter](https://www.missileworks.com/rrc2l) Given the cost of the avionics, you will be expected to return them after you finish the course. # Motors We will not have official launches for the first two rockets. However, we will provide support if you decide to go to local launches, either for certification flights, or to collect your own data for Assignment 5. We will also supply you with motors for your final project. Your choices for rocket motors are: - For the LOC Weasel, one of: - A pair of Aerotech [F67-9W](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/F67W/) or a pair of Aerotech [F67-9C](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/F67C/) - One Aerotech [H128W-14A](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/H128W/), - For the LOC Precision Vulcanite, one of: - One Aerotech [H128W-14A](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/H128W/), - One Aerotech [J270W-14A](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/HP-J270W/) (Level 2 cert.) - For the Modified Madcow Adventurer, four of: - Aerotech [J520W](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/J520W/), [J570](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/J570W/), [J575FJ](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/J575FJ/), [J825R](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/AeroTech/J825R/), or smaller 38 mm motor. - CTI [J150](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/949J150-P/), [J394](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/970J394-13A/), [J420](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/1008J420-15A/), [J453](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/1013J453-16A/), [J520](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/848J520-16A/), [J530](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/1115J530-15A/), [J580](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/896J580-17A/), [J595](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/985J595-16A/), [J600](https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/Cesaroni/999J600-16A/), or smaller 38 mm motor. # Building Supplies and Test Fins In addition to the rocket kits, avionics, and motors, we have building supplies, and the materials to construct three test fins to be tensile tested. These supplies include epoxys and fillers, cutting tools and drill bits, fasteners and assembly jigs. # Avionics Details ### Featherweight GPS Tracker The [Featherweight GPS Tracker](https://www.featherweightaltimeters.com/featherweight-gps-tracker.html) is a system with a small GPS receiver coupled to a LoRa radio transmitter, and a matching ground station. It will track a rocket to surprisingly high altitudes and distances. It is used for tracking a rocket's location in flight and finding it after it has landed. It requires you to have access to an iPhone or iPad for the tracking software. It is the best tracker I have found, and I have tested quite a few. ### The Small Teensy IMU and Logger !!! note We currently have two older generation loggers in stock. We are waiting for ten of the current generation loggers to have their IMU chip replaced. If the replacements work, we will have one per student to use. The Small Teensy IMU and Logger consists of a Teensy 4.1 soldered to a slightly larger IMU board that also has connections for thermistors to measure the exterior or interior air temperature. The Teensy can be programmed using the Arduino environment, although the default software was programmed in the Project IO environment. It was developed in house. ### Featherweight Raven 3 The [Featherweight Raven 3](https://www.featherweightaltimeters.com/raven-altimeter.html) flight computer is a dual-deploy controller that also measures acceleration and barometric altitude. We have a Raven 3 for each of the teams for the Final Project. Its main attribute is its small size, but it logs both barometric altitude and acceleration. The Raven 3 is Out Of Production (OOP). The current Raven is the Blue Raven which has lots of additional sensors. ### Eggtimer Quark [The Eggtimer Quark](http://eggtimerrocketry.com/eggtimer-quark/) is a flight computer for dual deployment of parachutes. We are using them for primary deployment for the Dual Deploy Vulcanite, and as a redundant deployment for the Final Project, with the Raven as the main flight computer. ### The Large Teensy IMU and Logger !!! note We have one or two older generation large loggers. There is currently no plan to make new generations ones. The Large Teensy IMU and Logger consists of a Teensy 4.1 soldered to an IMU board that is the same size as the AIM XTRA board. In addition to having all of the features of the Small Teensy IMU, it also has an on-board GPS, and eight channels of fairly high speed A-to-D conversion and buffer op-amps. The Teensy can be programmed using the Arduino environment, although the default software was programmed in the Project IO environment. It was developed in house. ### Eggfinder TX and Eggfinder Mini [The Eggfinder TX and Eggfinder Mini](http://eggtimerrocketry.com/home/eggfinder-gps-tracking-system/) are also GPS trackers. They do not require an iPhone or iPad but they are much less reliable and do a much worse job of storing the GPS locations for post-flight processing than the Featherweight. They may be requested if desired. ### AIM XTRA and AIM BASE The [AIM XTRA](http://entacore.com/electronics/aimxtra) is a flight computer that does GPS tracking, IMU data acquisition, and dual deploy control. The [AIM BASE](http://entacore.com/electronics/aimbase) is the matching ground receiver. It requires USB attachment to at Windows computer. The AIM XTRA 3.0 is much more reliable than the AIM XTRA 2's that we have. The 3.0 is as reliable as the Featherweight. If you can get the GPS on the 2 to lock, it is also reliable, but we have on occasion tried for several hours to get the 2 GPS to lock. They may be requested if desired. # Detailed Lists of Parts Below are the detailed lists of parts for the assemblies. ## LOC Precision Weasel Part Number |Name | Supplier | Project ------------|-----|----------|-------- B00004Z4BB |Blue Tape | Amazon | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 B001N7X1UA |Carpenters Glue | Amazon | Rkt 1 B07T7V23Y6 |Screwdrivers | Amazon | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 B07VK88CWZ |Sandpaper | Amazon | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 B07Y2JR4B2 |Mixing Cups | Amazon | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 BSI-201 |5 Minute Epoxy | eRockets | Rkt 1 JBW 8265-S |JB Weld | eRockets | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 90295A359 |#4 Nylon Washer | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 91249A046 |#2-56 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 91249A108 |#4-40 x 3/8 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 91249A111 |#4-40 x 1/2 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 91249A115 |#4-40 x 5/8 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 91249A119 |#4-40 x 3/4 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 94639A702 |#4 1/8" Spacer | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 94639A704 |#4 3/16" Spacer | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 94639A706 |#4 1/4" Spacer | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 95836A109 |M2 Pan Head | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 |M2 Nuts | HMC | Rkt 1 96537A120 |#4-40 Nut | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 98676A310 |M2 Nut | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 B083CV99JZ |Stir Sticks (50) | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 B088MLL6FS |Soup Spoons | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 B0897X7MS9 |Stir Sticks (50) | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 EST 9750 |29mm Motor Retainers | HMC | Rkt 1 38mm |Conformal Launch Guides | Giant Leap | Rkt 1 | 1/8" Shock Cord | Giant Leap | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 N/A |Nitrile Gloves | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 N/A |Safety Glasses | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 N/A |Glass microspheres | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 N/A |Ebay Bottom Circle | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Ebay Lower sides | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Ebay Middle Circle | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Eby Main Support | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Ebay Top Circle | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Ebay Upper Sides | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Weasel Fin Jigs | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Payload Build Spacer Weasel | HMC | Rkt 1 N/A |Velcro | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 N/A |Foam | HMC | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 PK-03 |LOC Weasel | LOC Precision | Rkt 1 25605A63 |Tap Wrench | McMaster | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 25995A143 |#2-56 Tap | McMaster | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 30585A19 |#2 Tap bit | McMaster | Rkt 1 35435A11 |X-Acto Knife | McMaster | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 8982K28 |Angle Iron | McMaster | Rkt 1, Rkt 2 ## Test Fins Part Number |Name | Supplier | Project ------------|-----|----------|-------- N/A |Aeropoxy | Fiberglass Supply | Fins, Rkt 2 N/A |Milled Glass Fiber | HMC | Fins N/A |Glass microspheres | HMC | Rkt 1, Fins, Rkt 2 N/A |Test Fin Pieces | HMC | Fins N/A |Test Fin Base Pieces | HMC | Fins N/A |Test Fin Main Support | HMC | Fins N/A |Test Fin Side Supports | HMC | Fins ## LOC Precision Dual Deploy Vulcanite Part Number |Name | Supplier | Project ------------|-----|----------|-------- 54mm |Conformal Launch Guides | Giant Leap | Rkt 2 | 1/8" Shock Cord | Giant Leap | Rkt 2 93085A106 |#4-40 100° Flathead | McMaster | Rkt 2 9489T113 |Eyebolt | McMaster | Rkt 2 96537A150 |#10 nut | McMaster | Rkt 2 96765A125 |#10 washers | McMaster | Rkt 2 N/A |Curing Stand | HMC | Rkt 2 N/A |Vulcanite Fin Jigs | HMC | Rkt 2 N/A |MM Spacer Support Vul | HMC | Rkt 2 N/A |Payload Spacer Vul | HMC | Rkt 2 N/A |Vulcanite Avionics BOard | HMC | Rkt 2 N/A |Squeeze Bottles | HMC | Rkt 2 RA38L |Aero Pack Motor Retainer | Madcow | Rkt 2 PK-52 |Vulcanite | LOC Precision | Rkt 2 FCP-6x6" |Chute Protector | Top Flight | Rkt 2 FCP-9x9" |Chute Protector | Top Flight | Rkt 2 PAR-12 | 12" Chute | Top Flight | Rkt 2 25995A145 |#4-40 Tap | McMaster | Rkt 2 2901A181 |#10 Clearance Drill bit | McMaster | Rkt 2 30585A57 |#4 Tap bit | McMaster | Rkt 2 3098A42 |100° Countersink | McMaster | Rkt 2
