Hum 2A
Indigenous People of the Western US

Papers and Projects

Papers should be typed double-space with one-inch margins in a readable font. The paper should be well structured and clear; it should make reference to readings or discussions in order to illustrate points. All standards of writing discussed in Hum 1 apply. Every paper must have a clear thesis, well defined organization, and good development.

1) What Is Culture?

Define and describe what constitutes a culture? Use examples from our study of California's Native American cultures but also reflect upon American society today. What are the signs of culture that you have experienced or that you see around you? 5 pages.

Due on Wednesday, February 7th.

2) Cultural Contrasts

Having studied several cultures of California and of the Southwest, compare and contrast these cultures. Select two to three respects in which these cultures can be compared or contrasted. Considering historical origins and geographic or environmental factors, suggest reasons for similarities or differences. Be sure to begin your paper with a clear thesis statement that implies how the paper will be organized and what discussions will be needed for development of your ideas. 5 pages.

Due on Wednesday, March 7th.

3) Presentation Paper: A written version of your presentation is due in class on the day of the assignment. This paper should develop the topic(s) in their natural order as you plan for your oral presentation. The length may vary. Both written and oral versions are graded.

4) Research Project: A 12 page research paper (bibliography included) on a relevant subject of your choice.

Select a project that is appropriate for indigenous people of the US. This could be a further, more detailed study of some aspect of Western people or it could be a comparative study of indigenous people in some area outside the Western US. Rather than considering a people as such, your project might consider an aspect of indigenous culture in more detail -- e.g., narratives, arts, basketry, languages, spiritualism, ritualism, historical relations, contemporary issues, etc.

Please review my "Standards for Writing Research Papers

(A portion of the grade on the research-project assignment will recognize timeliness and quality of planning throughout.)
