Every seminar course requires a research paper of significant length. In this case, the paper should be approximately 15 pages in length, with footnotes and bibliography. Footnotes can be done as end notes, notes at the bottom of the page, or in-line references to the bibliography, whatever style is best for you.
We will work on the research paper throughout the second half of the semester. The first assignment in the process will be a research prospectus. This is a one-page description of the project that you are considering. This will give me an opportunity to suggest ways of limiting or expanding your project as well as suggesting resources for it. Somewhat later, you should hand in a bibliography that includes all the materials you have found even though you may not have read all of them yet. The final preliminary assignment is to hand in an outline. The outline must be a full-sentence outline that indicates content rather than a simple topical outline.
Your research paper should draw from at least some hard-copy published materials (books, journal articles, etc.). You may use other materials from the Internet; however, references to the Internet must give the URL, date of access, individual or institutional authorship of the material, and anything else relevant to its authenticity.
Research papers for seniors are due no later than Friday, May 5, 2006, at 5:00 PM. Research papers for all others are due during the week of final exams, May 8 - 12, 2006, but no later than 5:00 PM on May 12th.
