Locate a portfolio book on a well known photographer. Select a book that displays a significant number of images but also has some substantial text, including some biographical materials and some of the artist's (or author's) observations about and insights into his/her art. Read in the context of viewing the images. Write 2-3 pages about this experience. Who was the artist? What do you now know about him/her? What sorts of artistic themes did this person work on? What elements of this person's images do you find most interesting and attractive?
I'll be happy to help you locate an artist and a portfolio; however, the libraries (Honnold and Dennison, especially) have good material. Meanwhile, you might consider Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Minor White, Edward Steichen, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Bret Weston, Cole Weston, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Werner Bischof, Anne Liebovitz, or Arnold Newman (to name only a few).
