Assignment 14

Due Friday 3/19 3:30 p.m.

Harvey Mudd College, Spring 2021

  1. Watch--and take notes as you do--Lecture 10: John Williams and the Return of Romanticism (19:14)

  2. Here are some questions to keep in mind as you watch the video:
    • How are the neo-Romantic scores similar to or different from Romantic scores of the 1930s through the 1950s?
    • What kinds of films lend themselves to a neo-Romantic score?
    • What are some distinctive characteristics and techniques of neo-Romantic scores?
    • Howard Shore says that he uses leitmotives to "clarify" the storytelling. How do you think leitmotives can do this?

  3. Go to Sakai->Forums->10 Response to video lecture 10 and write a paragraph response. You can respond to any of the above prompts or simply write your own unprompted critical thoughts on this topic. You may also read (and respond to) posts from others in the class, but your ideas should be your own. The paragraph should cite the video where appropriate and consist of at least 200 words.
