Watch--and take notes as you do--Lecture 5: Modernism (21:08)
Here are some questions to keep in mind as you watch the video:
- The video mentions several artistic terms associated with Modernism, including Expressionism, Dada, and Neo-Classicism. What, if any, characteristics do these trends share?
- What other characteristics distinguish Modernism from Romanticism?
- What are some musical characteristics that can make a score seem more dispassionate or emotionally detached?
- What are some kinds of stories or dramatic situations that would be more obviously suited to Romanticism or to Modernism?
- What did Adorno and others mean when they distinguished music "in parallel to the drama" from music "in counterpoint to the drama"?
